Note:  The video below was the first of many created by DPAN, which means Deaf Performing Artists Network.

Note:  The video below is owned by Dawn Sign Press and can be found in the Signing Naturally DVD.  It is one of my favorite stories about a science project gone wrong that turns into a mad chase after a ball.  Awesome use of classifiers, role shifting, and Non-Manual Signals.

Note:  The video below is Rosa Lee Gallimore, an incredible Deaf artist... love her work!

Note:  The video below is a Norwegian commercial that highlights a common error in spelling and pronunciation.

Note:  The video below is performed by Austin Andrews... awesome use of classifiers!  The story is about two brothers, one who has a very old type of hearing aid called a "body aid" that is a box worn around the neck with two strands of ear buds.  One brother day dreams about a team of ninjas that attack, but are defeated, all while a water drop is falling... think "The Matrix" and enjoy.

Note:  This video below was a week's worth of effort put forth by none other than Ms. Sydney Parham, an ASL 3 student from McNeil HS.... this is her take on "closed captioning"... awesome work, lady!  Did you know that youtube/google is working on automated captioning through voice recognition technology?  It's still in beginning stages, but very exciting for the Deaf community!

Note:  Did you know that Deaf people have their own culture and ways of doing things?  The video below is an expansion on three interesting comparisons between hearing and Deaf culture inspired by the book, "Deaf Culture:  Our Way".  In the video, he will highlight the two culture's approaches to find friends in a dark movie theater after getting up, distracted driving and habits in the car, and finally, how to get the attention of those inside a house upon arrival.  Interesting and true!

Note:  In American Sign Language, the video below is "clean" and without vulgarity... however, in English, it does have two choice expressions that make this video PG-13.  The ASL is creative and conceptually accurate... this is the world's only DEAF hip-hop artist, Signmark.

Note:  The video below aired during the 2008 Superbowl and is a tribute to a popular deaf joke about a couple who go to a hotel, but the husband forgets which room is his and finds a creative way to figure it out.  The original joke is the video underneath this one... check it out next.

Note:  The video below is owned by Dawn Sign Press and can be found in the Signing Naturally DVD.  It's the original joke that inspired the Superbowl Commercial "Bob's House" (above).  Enjoy watching Cinnie!

Note:  The video below is performed by Erik, who is a medical student from the Dominican Republic.  He is also fluent in Portugese and performs several other videos between the two languages.... pretty talented guy.  He is one of the best examples of using Classifiers, Non-Manual Signals, Conceptually Accurate ASL, and Characterization to transform a 2-D song into something visually incredible!

Note:  The video below is performed by Rosa Lee Gallimore.  She takes this song and stays true to the lyrics, but creates a whole new meaning by highlighting the relationship between a Deaf son who is misunderstood by his mother who tries to make him fit into the "hearing" mold by speaking.  I particularly like when the English lyrics say "Must have me confused with some other guy" and the son signs "You misunderstand; I'm not hearing!"  I guess he finally has his say.....

Note:  (Actual poem is captioned and starts at 1 min, 12 sec)  The video below is performed by Ella Mae Lentz... one of my heroes!  She is well-known for her ASL poetry and the video below is stunning.  It highlights a shared desire of the Deaf community to nurture a Deaf child's right to access what is naturally theirs... ASL and the shared culture of Deaf people.

Note:  The video below is part of a series created by CoCo, who has a channel called "Usherhood" that highlights her experiences as a person who is both deaf and blind due to Usher's Syndrome.  She is both candid and humorous in discussing her adventures dealing with the world's misunderstandings about Usher's Syndrome.  In this video, she is at Blockbuster... she is completely comfortable, but finds it funny that people stare and have to pick their chins up off the floor after seeing a woman with a cane in a MOVIE store.  Haha!

Note:  The video below is Swedish Sign Language (not ASL), but it is interesting to see that the facial grammar and body language is the same between the two.  She is highlighting the issues of cochlear implants and a strong opinion of the Deaf community that this is not a favorable "solution".  Cochlear Implants are a sensitive topic for Deaf people and widely misunderstood by the mainstream, hearing public.  This technology is not a "fix" and does not make a deaf person become hearing.  We'll discuss this deeply-rooted and controversial topic more in class.
